TULSA, Okla. – The No. 23 Iowa State women’s golf team is in 22nd place after three rounds of the 2014 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship. The Cyclones shot a 292 this afternoon at the Tulsa Country Club for a three-day 896 tally.

The outstanding consistent play of junior Chonlada Chayanun has been the story of the week for the Cyclones. Chayanun is currently in a tie for third place in the medalist race at even par (210) after carding a third-round 69 this morning.

So far nothing has been able to rattle the steady Cyclone, as Chayanun hit all nine greens in regulation on the first nine. After bogeying No. 1 on the back side, she bounced back with a birdie on No. 3 and a deuce on the par-3 sixth hole when she snaked in a 25-footer. She added another birdie on No. 7.

Chayanun became the first Cyclone to record a sub-70 round in NCAA postseason play yesterday and she backed it up today.  She joins teammates Cajsa Persson, Prima Thammaraks and Sasikarn On-iam as the only Cyclones in school history to record back-to-back sub-70 rounds in a tournament.

Chayanun obviously feels very comfortable at the Tulsa Country Club.

“To be honest with you, I played really well on my practice rounds,” Chayanun said. “I just feel like I love this course. When I like a course, I usually play well. I just feel super confident with every single shot I play here.”

Chayanun is three strokes back of third-round leaders Celine Butler (Duke) and Doris Chen (USC) going into the final round tomorrow.

Sophomore Cajsa Persson fired a 73 today to move into a tie for 93rd at 228. Persson didn’t have a birdie on her card, but stayed out of trouble by posting 16 pars.

Seniors Prima Thammaraks and Sasikarn On-iam both posted a pair of 75s. On-iam started the day with a triple-bogey, but bounced back to go 2-over the rest of the way. She is currently tied for 109th at 231.

Thammaraks, who is in a tie for 116th at 233, had four birdies today.

Carmen Vidau also came in with a 75 this morning. She currently sits in a tie for 93rd at 228.
Head coach Christie Martens was happy with the score improvement.

“We were more consistent today,” head coach Christie Martens said. “Chonlada played great once again and has been a lot of fun to watch and done a lot of great things on the course. Cajsa made 13-straight pars today and made par on every hole on our second nine. Those were both exciting to see today.”

The Cyclones begin the final round tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. CT.
