Cyclone Charge Falls One Shot Short At UCF Challenge
ORLANDO, Fla. - The No. 22 Iowa State women’s golf team’s late charge fell just short, as the Cyclones placed second in the 19-team UCF Challenge by one stroke over host UCF this afternoon.
The tournament featured eight teams ranked in the nation’s top-50 according to Golfstat.
The Cyclones, who were down six shots heading into the last day, recorded a final round tally of 285, the second-lowest mark of the day. ISU ended the tournament at 858 (292-281-285=858), the second best 54-hole score in school history.
The runner-up finish was the best showing of the year, as the Cyclones were outstanding in their first tournament of the spring season.
The Cyclones’ strong outing was aided by the play of Prima Thammaraks and Chonlada Chayanun, who both registered top-10 performances.
Thammaraks followed up yesterday’s 69 performance with another 3-under 69 this afternoon to tie for fourth at 213 (75-69-69).
Thammaraks, whose 12 birdies tied for third in the tournament, became the second Cyclone in school history to record back-to-back sub-70 rounds with her performance this week. Her top-10 showing is the second of the season and the seventh of her career.
Chayanun tied for seventh after firing a final-round 72. She finished the tournament at 214 (73-69-72), the best 54-hole score of her career. Her top-10 finish is the first of the season and the third of her career.
Sasikarn On-iam shot a 1-under 71 in today’s final round to finish at 215 (73-71-71), which was good enough for a tie for 14th.
Sophomore Cajsa Persson tied for 22nd at 219 (71-72-74) and freshman Carmen Vidau tied for 63rd at 224 (79-72-73).
In its final two rounds, ISU counted just one score over par (Vidau’s 1-over 73).
UCF’s Fanny Cnops was the tournament medalist (67-70-71=208).
The Cyclones are back in action next week at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 16-18.
