AMES, Iowa - Coming into the 2013-2014 season, the Iowa State women’s golf team had garnered a total of 23 sub-70 rounds in its history. After the Cyclones added two more at the Hurricane Invitational, that number is now up to 31 with eight rounds in the 60s this season. ISU’s eight sub-70 rounds for this year is the third most in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma (11) and Oklahoma State (9).

Four Cyclone golfers have contributed to this inflating number, as Prima Thammaraks, Sasikarn On-iam, Chonlada Chayanun and Cajsa Persson have all recorded up a pair of 69s this season.

In the Big 12 this year, four golfers have recorded back-to-back rounds of sub-70 golf. One of them is Oklahoma State’s Julie Yang, who is currently ranked 14th nationally by Golfweek. The other three are Cyclones: Persson, Thammaraks and On-iam. Coming into this season, no Iowa State golfer had ever achieved this feat.

Persson became the first Cyclone in school history to record back-to-back sub-70 rounds of golf when she posted a pair of 69s in rounds one and two of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational. She capped off the tournament with an even-par 72 to finish tied for fifth with a 54-hole total of 210, the best 54-hole score in Iowa State history. Persson is currently third on the team in stroke average at 73.62.

Next to string together a pair of 69s was Thammaraks at the UCF Challenge. Thammaraks reeled off back-to-back 69s in the final two rounds to tie for fourth. She now has four career sub-70 rounds and a season stroke average of 73.81.

The most recent Cyclone to achieve the feat is On-iam. The senior became the first Cyclone to earn medalist honors in an event in six years when she opened the Hurricane Invitational with back-to-back 69s. On-iam recorded a 54-hole tally of 211 (69-69-73=211) at the Hurricane Invitational, the second-best 54-hole mark in school history.

The Cyclones are currently ranked 19th nationally by Golfweek heading into the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic match play event, April 4-6 in Athens, Ga.
