AMES, Iowa – Iowa State dropped the series finale to Texas, 17-1 Saturday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The loss dropped ISU to 18-21 overall and 1-8 in Big 12 play. Texas improved to 26-16 and 6-1 in conference competition.

Brilliant Brittany
Brittany Gomez continued her strong season on Saturday and demonstrated the best tool in her arsenal, speed. As ISU’s first batter of the game, Gomez laid down a nice bunt in front of the plate and she hurried over to first in time for the infield single. During Sarah Hawryluk’s at-bat, Gomez hustled her way over to second for her 21st stolen base of the season, the 52nd of her career.

Gomez was at it again on the base paths in the bottom of the third as she led off the inning with a hard-hit single to short. During Aly Cappaert’s at bat, with Gomez on second, Cappaert hit a blooper to left. Gomez was late to get started, wanting to prevent a double play if a catch was made, she had enough speed to get to third in time and then was the beneficiary of a Texas throwing error that allowed Gomez to cross home as ISU’s lone run of the game.

Texas’ Fast Start
The Longhorns wasted no time getting ahead in the first as Brejae Washington drew a walk to lead off the game and Lindsey Stephens got hit by a pitch. UT’s first hit of the game was a big one as Taylor Thom hit one off the wall in right that scored both runners, Stephens from first, to give the Longhorns an early advantage. Thom was brought home on a Tiarra Davis groundout.

Texas doubled its advantage in the second as Devon Tunning reached on an error by Jorden Spendlove at first and was promptly brought home at the next at bat when Stephanie Ceo launched a 2-run home run to left-center to make it 5-0 Texas. With runners on second and third and two outs, Tiarra Davis hit a screamer to left that brought home Brejae Washington at third. Thom went around third heading for home, but a nice throw by Liana Henry to Rachel Hartman got Thom, who tried to run over Hartman but the freshman catcher held on, at the plate to keep the score at 6-0 Longhorns.

A Debut in the Circle
Iowa State turned to a different option in the circle in the fifth inning as Sara Rice made her ISU debut in the circle. Having not pitched since her sophomore year of high school, Rice demonstrated some speed and though she allowed a 2-run home run to Marlee Gabaldon, she did pick up a strikeout of Taylor McAllister in her one inning of work.

On Deck
Iowa State returns to the Cyclone Sports Complex on Tuesday for a doubleheader against North Dakota, starting at 2 p.m. ISU will then play Omaha on Wednesday at 4 p.m., again at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones will have next weekend off, as it is the team’s Big 12 bye week.
