ELUM, Wash- In the last four years, the Iowa State women’s golf team fell just a few strokes short of reaching its ultimate goal of making the NCAA Championship. Not this year.

The Cyclones, ranked 25th nationally, broke through with a final-round 304 this afternoon at the Tumble Creek Club at Suncadia Resort to tie for sixth at the 24-team NCAA West Regional. ISU shot a three-round 909 (300-305-304) tally.

With the top eight teams advancing on to the NCAA Championship in each of the three regionals, the Cyclones will make their first-ever national tournament appearance. The 2014 NCAA Championship will be held at the Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 20-23.

“I am so excited for our team,” Iowa State head coach Christie Martens said. “It was really a tough day today. It was really windy and I am so proud of our effort. Our players came back on the back nine. They really came together and played solid. It’s a huge step for us and it shows a lot of people what kind of program we have. I am excited to see how we play down in Tulsa.”

It’s an historic achievement for the Cyclones. Since the NCAA began its regional format in 1993, no Division I team from the state of Iowa had ever made the NCAA Championships. ISU is now the first.

The Cyclones were consistent in all three rounds. Senior Prima Thammaraks led the way today with an even-par 72, the lowest score recorded by a Cyclone during the week. Thammaraks, who had four birdies on her card, tied for 17th at 225 (73-80-72).

“Prima was awesome today,” Martens said. “She was putting so well and she managed the wind really well. I was really proud of her.”

Chonlada Chaynaun and Cajsa Persson carded a pair of 77s today. Chayanun, who tied for 28th at 228 (77-74-77), was boosted by an eagle on the par-5, 15th-hole. Persson tied for 39th at 230 (76-77-77).

Two-time All-Big 12 pick Sasikarn On-iam tied for 31st at 229 (77-74-78).

A total team effort is needed for any squad to advance to the national finals. Freshman Carmen Vidau tied for 94th at 241, but her opening-round 74 was crucial in getting the Cyclones off to a solid start.

Martens was proud of her rookie’s contribution to the team.

“That was huge for Carmen,” Martens said. “She played so well on the back nine on Thursday. It was key for us to get a good round from her.”

The Cyclones will now prepare for their historic first appearance in the NCAA finals at the Tulsa Country Club, which was built in 1908. The following 24 teams will compete for the national title: Iowa State, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, N.C. State, Duke, Stanford, Virginia, Tulane, Campbell, UCLA, Alabama, Mississippi State, California, Ohio State, Kansas, Arizona, Florida, USC, Washington, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Michigan State, Texas A&M, Northwestern.
