TULSA, Okla. – The No. 23 Iowa State women’s golf team shot a final-round 290 to finish 23rd at the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship at the Tulsa Country Club this afternoon.

The Cyclones ended their first-ever appearance at the NCAA national tournament with a 72-hole 1186 total. The 290 today was the best round of the week for the Cyclones. Head coach Christie Martens was happy with the quick start this morning.

“We started off a lot better today,” Martens said. “We were able to get a lot of birdies early on, but unfortunately had some bigger numbers down the stretch.”

Junior Chonlada Chayanun had a coming out party at the national tournament. Chayanun posted a 72 this morning to finish in a tie for seventh at 282. Her top-10 finish automatically earns her spot on the WGCA Honorable Mention All-America team. It marks the first time a Cyclone earned All-America honors under the NCAA banner (Barb Thomas was an AIAW All-American in 1980).

“Chonlada had such a great tournament and it has been great for her confidence,” Martens said. “She has grown so much and it shows she can compete with anyone. This is a huge honor for her.”

Chayanun had to scramble a little more today than her previous three rounds, finding herself in the trees on her approach shots. She had to make a sliding, 10-footer on the last hole for bogey.

“It was quite a bogey,” Martens said. “She did not hit the ball as well today and she was a little disappointed in that. But overall, she had a great tournament.”

ISU’s two seniors- Sasikarn On-iam and Prima Thammaraks – closed out their incredible Cyclone careers with their best rounds of the week. On-iam fired an even-par 70 to end the tournament in a tie for 94th at 301. On-iam had six birdies on her card today, including a stretch of three-straight birdies on holes 3-5.

Thammaraks carded a final-round 71 this morning to end the tournament at 304 and in a tie for 105th. Thammaraks was 4-under through 14 holes until a pair of double bogeys down the stretch cost her a chance to finish in the red today.

On-iam (75.03) and Thammaraks (75.17) end their careers with the top-two career stroke averages in school history.

“They have given so much and worked so hard to take our program to the next level,” Martens said. “We used to be a team that was happy to make regionals. They helped change that. They should be credited for raising our program.”

Cajsa Persson fired a 77 today and finished in a tie for 111th at 305. Carmen Vidau shot a 78 and ended in a tie for 113th 306.
