AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men’s golf team signed one of Australia’s top junior golfers in Ruben Sondjaja, Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank announced today.

Sondjaja, a native of Sydney, Australia, was named captain of the New South Wales junior team for 2013 and was a member of the NSW men’s team for the Australian Interstate Matches. He finished runner-up at the Riversdale Cup, Australia’s oldest amateur event, to cap off his 2013 season.

Entering the year, Sondjaja was a semi-finalist in the 2012 Australian Amateur and was selected to the 2012 Australian junior team where he went undefeated in the Trans-Tasman Cup. The future Cyclone linkster tied for 16th at the 2012 Callaway Junior World Championship held at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, Calif.

“Ruben is a very accomplished player with a great desire to improve,” Tank said. “I believe that he’ll make an immediate impact on our program. I look forward to helping him reach his goals as a Cyclone.”

Sondjaja will become the third Cyclone on the 2013-14 roster from Oceania, joining sophomore Sam Daley (Australia) and junior Duncan Croudis (New Zealand).
