Iowa State Announces 2013 Hall of Fame Class

AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State Letterwinners Club announced today Iowa State's Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2013. Six former Cyclone greats will be inducted into the Iowa State Hall of Fame on Aug. 30 in a special ceremony at the ISU Alumni Center in Ames. The inductees will be honored at halftime of the Iowa State-Northern Iowa football game on Aug 31.

The Iowa State Hall of Fame was established in 1997 and 148 Cyclone legends have been enshrined. To purchase tickets to the ceremony, contact Diane Shearer or Lindsey Long in the ISU Development office at 515-294-5022. You can also register for tickets to the banquet online.

Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2013

Doug Fitzjarrell- Gymnastics
• Key Member of two NCAA Championship teams at Iowa State (1973, 1974).
• Won Scholar-Athlete honors in the Big 8 conference (1973, 1974).
• Won four Big Eight titles at the 1974 league meet (AA, FX, V, PB).
• 1974 NCAA champion in the floor exercise, scoring 19.125.
• Competed in the World Games Final Trials (1973, 1974).
• One of six finalists for the 1974 Nissen Award.
• Named Iowa State’s Athlete of the Year in 1974.
• Competed in the Olympic Final Trials (1976).

Gordon Hassman- Wrestling
• Three-time All-American at 167 and 157 pounds (1963, 1964, 1965).
• Two-time Big Eight champion (1964, 1965).
• 1964 NCAA champion at 157 pounds, defeating Syracuse’s Dick Slutzky.
• Named Outstanding Wrestler at the 1964 Big Eight meet.
• Iowa State’s Athlete of the Year in 1964.
• Key member of Iowa State’s 1965 NCAA title team.

Veryl Long- Wrestling
• Three-time All-American at 147 pounds (1963, 1964, 1965).
• Big Eight champion at 147 pounds in 1963.
• 1965 NCAA champion at 147 pounds, defeating Gettysburg’s Joe Bavaro.
• One of two NCAA titlists for Iowa State on its 1965 NCAA Championship team.
• ISU finished second, third and first, respectively, at the NCAA Championship with Long in the lineup.
• Compiled a career 95-4 record.

Kim Mazza- Gymnastics
• Iowa State’s first-ever NCAA qualifier in 1997.
• Scored the first perfect 10 in Iowa State and Big 12 history in the floor exercise.
• Won the 1997 Big 12 title in the floor exercise.
• Two-time Academic All-American.
• Iowa State’s Most Valuable Gymnast (1996, 1997).
• Named Iowa State’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1997.

Mike Myers- Baseball
• Second-Team All-Big Eight in 1989.
• 1990 Big Eight All-Tournament Team.
• Enjoyed a 13-year Major League career.
• Led the MLB in appearances in 1996 (83) and 1997 (88).
• Pitched in 78 games and compiled a 1.99 ERA for Colorado in 2000.
• Won a World Series ring for the Boston Red Sox in 2004.

Roger Watts- Swimming
• 10-time conference champion.
• Nine-time All-American in the 220-yard freestyle, 440-yard freestyle and 1,500-meter freestyle.
• Finished fifth in the 1,500-meter at the 1949 NCAA Championship.
• Broke six conference records while at Iowa State.
• Led Iowa State to conference swimming titles in 1947, 1948 and 1949.
• Helped Iowa State tie for seventh at the 1948   Championship.
