AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team opened up its 2014 Big 12 campaign against Oklahoma Friday afternoon at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones (17-12, 0-1 Big 12) fell to the No. 16 Sooners (22-8, 1-0 Big 12), 10-0 in five innings.

It was a day for the power hitters as the Sooners posted four home runs en route to the victory.

OU’s Powerful Start
There was excitement in the air with the start of the Big 12 season and one of the top teams in the conference in Oklahoma making their way to the Cyclone Sports Complex. However, Oklahoma showed they were up to the task on a chilly day in Ames as lead-off hitter Georgia Casey started the game with a deep solo homer to left field off Katie Johnson to put the Sooners up 1-0.

Johnson settled down in the first, retiring the next three batters in order to end the inning.

Another Sooner Home Run
With the game 2-0 Oklahoma headed into the third inning, Iowa State was still in strong shape to make a run once the bats got hot. However, Oklahoma was insistent on making it as tough as task as possible as Kady Self hit her first home run of the day over the fence in right to bring home two runs and up the Oklahoma lead to 3-0.

Self would post another homer in the fourth inning to give herself two home runs and five RBIs on the day.

Iowa State’s Chance
Headed to the bottom of the third down 4-0, Iowa State wanted to make a dent into the scoreboard before it got too far away. The Cyclones saw Sara Rice reach base on a hit by pitch, and Maddie Reese win an enduring at-bat over Kelsey Stevens by drawing a walk. Brittany Gomez then moved everyone over with a single up the middle to load the bases with just one out.

However, Stevens responded in the circle with a strikeout of Sarah Hawryluk and inducing a fly ball by Lexi Slater to get out of the jam.

Finishing Touches
Oklahoma got the needed eight-run lead in the fifth inning as Shelby Pendley demonstrated why she is one of the most feared hitters in the Big 12 with a big 3-run home run to move Oklahoma ahead 10-0.

Player of the Game
Brittany Gomez. The Cyclone lead-off hitter demonstrated her ability with a 2-for-3 day. ISU’s All-Big 12 sophomore centerfielder now has 47 hits on the season.

On Deck
Iowa State returns to the Cyclone Sports Complex tomorrow at noon for game two of its series against Oklahoma. First pitch is at noon and the game will be aired live on Cyclones.TV Powered by Mediacom and on the Cyclones.TV web player.
