AMES, Iowa – Iowa State was able to close two-thirds of its deficit to Omaha Wednesday at the Cyclone Sports Complex, but ultimately came up short as UNO prevailed 3-2. The loss dropped ISU to 20-22, while Omaha moved up to 23-15.

Omaha’s Quick Start
The Mavericks got right to work against Paris Imholz in the top of the first as lead-off batter Allie Mathewson hit a double to left and then Amber Lutmer reached after Liana Henry dropped by a fly ball. With runners on second and third, and no outs, Imholz got two in a row, but could not get out unscathed as Lizzie fired one into the gap in left-center to bring both runners home and moved Omaha ahead 2-0.

Iowa State Leaves the Bases Loaded
Jorden Spendlove recorded her first hit, and ISU’s first hit of the game with a single, but the hit was surrounded by a pair of ISU strikeouts. Sara Rice continued the inning with a single and Maddie Reese drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Brittany Gomez came to the dish, but the Cyclone centerfielder struck out and the Mavericks got out of the jam.

Omaha’s Third Run
In the top of the fourth, Mara Eeman led off with a single to left. Two outs later and with Eeman on second, Tara Trede posted a single to right. Aly Capapert, in right for the injured Sarah Hawryluk, fired a one-hopper on target to home plate, but the throw was a step late as Eeman slid in to put UNO ahead 3-0. A Mathewson single put runners on the corners, but Omaha was forced to strand two as Imholz induced a fly ball to Lutmer to end the inning.

Iowa State Gets on the Board
The Cyclones finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as Rachel Hartman led off the inning with a single. Spendlove then recorded her 40th hit and 20th RBI of the season with a double off the left field wall that required a chase from UNO’s fielders. That extra time bought Hartman enough time to hurry around the bases and score all the way from first to get ISU on the board at 3-1.

ISU got its second run in the bottom of the fifth as Sara Davison and Lexi Slater posted a one-out double and single, respectively, to put runners on the corners. Cappaert posted her 34th RBI of the season as she bisected the left-side of the Omaha infield to bring home Davison and make the score 3-2 Mavericks.

Spendlove walked to load the bases with two outs, but Henry could not bring anyone home and for the second time in the game, ISU left the bases loaded.

Omaha Leaves the Bases Loaded
Imholz got herself into quite the jam in the top of the seventh inning as she issued a four-pitch walk to Lutmer and then hit Omaha batters Sydney Hames and Campbell Ditto with pitches to load the bases in spite of not allowing a hit. A long at bat against Noble ended with a grounder to short and ISU getting the force at home. Eeman hit one hard to center, but Gomez was on top of it and ISU escaped the bases loaded jam.

Cappaert led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right, and she was promptly moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hartman. However, Cappaert became ISU’s 11th runner left on base as Spendlove fouled out and Henry lined one to second base to end the game.

On Deck
This weekend is Iowa State’s Big 12 bye, thus the Cyclones are not in action. ISU returns to the Cyclone Sports Complex on Tuesday for a doubleheader against South Dakota, which is slated to begin at 2 p.m. This doubleheader was originally scheduled for March 25, and then March 27 with both dates being rain outs before the games were moved to this coming Tuesday.
