PHILADELPHIA – Jon Reader is the top seed at 174 pounds and he looked like it in a major decision win in the first round of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday in the Wells Fargo Arena. Iowa State 197-pounder Jerome Ward was also a first-round winner. The Cyclones posted a 2-3 record in the session as Chris Drouin, Cole Shafer and Kyle Simonson lost their first-round tilts.

“Jon wrestled like he is on a mission,” Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. “He was in control the entire time against a guy who is difficult to score on. Overall you can’t be happy with a 2-3 record in a round.”

Iowa State is in 35th with five points after the first round. Penn State leads the team competition with 20 points.

Reader picked up a takedown only 15 seconds into his match with Michigan’s Justin Zeerip. He then continued to take down Zeerip and rode his opponent for almost six minutes en route to a 13-3 major decision victory. He will face Purdue’s Luke Manuel in the second round tonight. Reader is now 35-0.

Jerome Ward used a late escape to outlast Erik Schuth of Ohio by a score of 4-3. Ward, the 11th seed  at 197-pounds, defeated Schuth earlier this season 3-1. Ward will face Penn’s sixth-seeded Micah Burak tonight in the second round.

Drouin earned an early takedown against the No. 9 seed Cole Von Ohlen of Air Force. Von Ohlen used a reversal to take Drouin directly to his back and earn the fall late in the first period. Drouin will now match up against former All-American Cody Cleveland of Tennessee-Chattanooga. The loser of the match will be knocked out of the tournament.

Shafer fell to Jake Meredith of Arizona State by a 10-0 major decision. Shafer will face Brad Dieckhaus of Northern Illinois and must win to stay alive in the tournament.

Kyle Simonson lost to Iowa’s seventh-seeded Blake Rasing by a score of 2-0. Simonson gave up a second period escape then was unable to notch his own escape in the final period. He will have the winner of Jeremy Johnson of Ohio or Peter Sturgeon of North
Carolina Greensboro tonight to stay alive on the bottom side of the bracket.

Action will resume in Session II at 5:30 p.m. CDT
