PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Iowa State 174-pounder Jon Reader continued to roll through his bracket at the 2011 NCAA Championships and is an NCAA semifinalist. Jerome Ward won both of his consolation matches in the session and will wrestle for a chance to become an All-American in Friday’s evening session. Iowa State is 19th overall in the team standing with 20 points. Cornell is the team leader with 61 points. Penn State is second with 60.5 points and Iowa third with 52 points. The semifinal round will start at 6 p.m. CDT.
Reader quickly took down quarterfinal opponent Mike Letts of Maryland and then proceeded to ride him the entire first period. He then reversed the Terrapin in the second period. Reader finished strong with a late takedown and racked up over four minutes of riding time en route to a solid 8-2 victory over the eighth seed. Reader will wrestle fifth-seeded Chris Henrich of Virginia. Henrich placed third in the 174-pound weight class at the 2010 NCAA tournament.
Ward racked up six takedowns in a relentless victory over Zachary Bennett of North Carolina. The junior hit a late takedown and rode his opponent out to earn a 14-5 major decision and move on to the next round.
Ward followed up with a subsequent 3-2 victory over John Hall of Boston. Ward fended off a late takedown attempt to win and will wrestle Iowa’s fifth-seeded Luke Lofthouse in the next round. The winner will be an All-American.
Kyle Simonson extended his tournament with a third-period pin of Michigan State’s Joseph Rizqallah. The wrestlers were in a very close match before Simonson put Rizqallah to his back for the fall.
Unfortunately, Simonson suffered a severe aggravation of a previous injury and was forced to injury default to Spencer Myers of Maryland in the next match to end the Cyclone’s season.
Chris Drouin’s career was ended by Mattew Bonson of Loch Haven via technical fall in the second period.
