Jon Reader to Wrestle in NCAA Final
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Iowa State 174-pounder Jon Reader churned out a 4-3 victory over fifth-seeded Chris Henrich of Virginia in his 174-pound semi-final of the NCAA Tournament Friday to reach the finals for the first time in his career. Reader will wrestle Stanford’s seventh-seeded Nick Amuchastegui in the championship match on Saturday night. Iowa State sits in 21st place with 27.5 points. Penn State leads the the tournament after two days with 92.5 points. The finals will start Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CDT in Wells-Fargo Arena.
"I am coached by a man who is like another father to me," Reader said of Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson. "I have been doing the right things and listening to what he has told me."
Reader and Henrich got into numerous scramble situations early in the match, but the first period ended scoreless. Reader then scored a quick reversal in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. After a Henrich escape, Reader secured a takedown to take a 4-1 lead in the match. Henrich escaped, then chose down to start the third period and escaped quickly. The two exchanged stall warnings in the third, but when the dust settled it was Reader who was victorious.
"I thought Jon was a little disapointed with the match," Jackson said. "He can get a little racy. I told him 'you will be better tomorrow.'"
Jerome Ward fell only one match short of becoming an All-American, dropping a 3-1 decision to Iowa’s fifth-seeded Luke Lofthouse in the round of 12.
