UPDATED BRACKETS

ST. LOUIS - Andrew Sorenson advanced to the quarterfinal round in the 165-pound bracket of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday evening in the Scottrade Center. Sorenson, the No. 3 seed, defeated Cornell's Marshall Peppelman, 4-2 to advance to the round of eight against 11th-seed Brandon Hatchett of Lehigh Friday morning. Penn State leads the team scoring after the first day with 38.5 points. Iowa State is 25th with 10 points.

Three Iowa State wrestlers, Ryak Finch (125), Luke Goettl (141) and Matt Gibson (HWT) won their consolation matches and remain in the tournament.

"We have four of our five guys surviving into day number two," Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson said. "Andrew did a good job today. The scores do not matter. He wrestled tough and not at 100 percent and showed poise."

Sorenson racked up more than two minutes of riding time against Peppelman. The Cyclone received treatment immediately after the win.  Sorenson and Hatchett have never met. Sorenson is 29-2 this season.

Finch got back on the winning track by pinning Tyler Iwamura of Cal-Bakersfield in 52 seconds. Finch, now 15-11 this season, will wrestle Jon Morrison of Oklahoma State Friday morning. Finch beat Morrison, 3-2 in Stillwater, Okla. in January but lost to the Cowboy 4-1 at the Big 12 Championships.

Goettl followed Finch's victory by fall with another pin. The Cyclone stuck Kevin Fanta in 1:40 to improve to 12-12 this season. Goettl will face Mitchell Port of Edinboro in the first of two rounds of consolation Friday morning.

Boaz Beard lost a 11-5 decision to Erich Schmidtke of Oklahoma at 184 pounds and dropped out of the tournament.

Gibson faced in-state rival Blayne Beale of Northern Iowa in one of the final matches of the day. After a reversal and back points in the first period, Gibson held a 4-3 advantage. After a quick reversal in the second period, Gibson began racking up riding time. Gibson finished off the match strong, nearly pinning Blayne and producing over three minutes riding time en route to a 10-3 decision.
