Sorenson and Beard Named To NWCA All-Academic Team
AMES, Iowa – Cyclone wrestlers Andrew Sorenson and Boaz Beard were both named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Academic team for the 2011-12 season. The NWCA releases their All-Academic team annually to honor student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom.
Sorenson has earned his degree in kinesiology at Iowa State and is currently pursuing a graduate degree in higher education. The Wooden, Iowa native was also honored as one of just seven wrestlers to earn the status of Academic All-Big 12 first team in 2012.
Sorenson compiled a 28-4 overall record and a perfect 17-0 record in dual meets during the 2011-12 season. The senior was the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open champion at 165 and an NCAA qualifier, falling just one match short of All-American status.
Redshirt sophomore Boaz Beard is currently an undergraduate in kinesiology and was also named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team.
Beard completed the season with a 10-7 record, and was runner-up at the Big 12 Championships at 184 pounds. The Wichita, Kan. native was an NCAA qualifier and received the Total Commitment Award at the annual team banquet.
