Mayfield, Beard Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors
IRVING, Texas - Redshirt senior Max Mayfield received 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Wrestling First Team honors, the league office announced Tuesday. Redshirt junior Boaz Beard earned second team honors.
Mayfield has already received his undergraduate degree in computer engineering from Iowa State. The Davenport, Iowa native is currently a graduate student in Business Administration with plans to graduate in May. Mayfield has maintained above a 3.20 cumulative GPA throughout his time at Iowa State.
On the mat, Mayfield is 11-11 overall this season wrestling at 149 pounds. He is 39-38 in his career as a Cyclone and will look to pick-up his 40th career victory Friday at the Big 12 Duals.
Beard is a Kinesiology/ Pre-Physical Therapy major and plans to graduate in the spring of 2014. The Academic All-Big 12 honor for Beard is his second straight, as he received first team recognition in 2012.
On the mat, Beard is 13-6 overall this season and 8-3 in dual competition. The Wichita, Kan. native is Iowa State's second-highest ranked wrestler, as InterMat has him ranked No. 15 at 184 pounds.To qualify for Academic All-Big 12 honors, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher (either cumulative or the two previous semesters) and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
