Moreno To Compete In All-Star Showdown Saturday
AMES, Iowa – For the first time since 2009, the Iowa State wrestling team is sending a wrestler to the NWCA All-Star Classic. All-American 165-pounder Michael Moreno will square off against three-time All-American David Taylor of Penn State Saturday night in Fairfax, Va. on the campus of George Mason University.
Moreno is coming off a stellar sophomore season where he went 31-10 en route to a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Championships. The Urbandale, Iowa native, has garnered much preseason hype and is slotted at No. 3 in the latest InterMat poll, behind Taylor and Oklahoma State’s Tyler Caldwell.
His opponent, Taylor, is a three-time NCAA finalist and 2012 NCAA champion at 157 pounds. Taylor also took home the Hodge Trophy in 2012, which recognizes the best pound for pound collegiate wrestler.
Head coach Kevin Jackson is excited about the opportunity and challenge that awaits Moreno on Saturday night.
“We go into each and every match to compete at the highest level we possibly can,” Jackson said. “If we do that, we give ourselves a chance to win. I think in the big picture, a match of this caliber puts us ahead of schedule.”
The annual event will feature 10 exhibition matches pitting the top wrestlers in the country against one other.
“It’s an exciting event,” Jackson said. “The NWCA has done a great job promoting this event and turning it into one of the marquee events of the wrestling season, inviting the best of the best to compete. Some of the matches you’ll be seeing are projected NCAA finals in March.”
The main event begins at 6:15 p.m. (CST) from the Patriot Center. Flowrestling will be covering the exhibition showcase and providing a live stream for all FloPro members. You can sign up for a FloPro account by clicking here.
