BATON ROUGE, La. – An effort that required all five tools of the game led Iowa State to a 4-2 win over Harvard Saturday at Tiger Park. The win improved the Cyclones to 14-3 on the season while Harvard fell to 5-4.

Quick Starts
Iowa State did not waste any time getting going in the first. Brittany Gomez legged out an infield single to get the action underway and promptly stole second base. Sarah Hawryluk then put a single down in leftfield to put runners on the corners. Sara Davison brought home the first run of the game with single to right-center and then stole second, too. Aly Cappaert grounded out for the first out of the inning, but not before Hawryluk crossed home to put the Cyclones ahead 2-0.

Harvard made a quick response with two runs of their own to tie it up. Shelbi Olson drew a walk and Kasey Lange got hit by a pitch to put two on with one out. During Emily Gusse’s at-bat, Harvard tried a double-steal and Rachel Hartman skied her throw to third, allowing Olson to score and make it 2-1. The Crimson then tied the game two batters late with a Catherine Callaway base knock to right.

The Breakthrough
The game settled down from there with Iowa State’s ace, Katie Johnson, beginning to rarely allow a runner, much less hits. Harvard countered by bringing their ace, Laura Ricciardone, in and the game meandered along fairly uneventfully.

That changed in the top of the fifth as Gomez led off with her third hit of the game. Two batters later, a Davison single put runners on the corners. During Cappaert’s at bat, a wild pitch allowed Gomez to come in and slide home safely to put the Cyclones back ahead 3-2. Davison moved over to third and would score on a Lexi Slater liner to center to put the score at 4-2.

Shutting it Down
Harvard would not go away lightly, as Callaway led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, only the Crimson’s second hit since the first inning. However, in a game filled with outstanding defensive plays, the biggest one came in the next at-bat as Savannah Bradley grounded one to Sara Rice at third, who started a 5-4-3 double play to end Harvard’s best chance to get back in the game.

Player of the Game
Brittany Gomez. At the plate, Gomez had her first four-hit game of the season and third four-hit game of her career with a 4-for-4 day which included two infield singles she had to leg out. On the base-paths, Gomez stole two bases to bring her SB total on the season to nine. She also slid home on a close play on a Ricciardone wild pitch to score what would be the winning run. In the outfield, Gomez ended the bottom of the fourth by throwing a dart to home on an Andrea Del Conte single to get Callaway out by four feet.

Iowa State will play again this afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. showdown against No. 21 LSU. Cyclones.TV subscribers will be able to watch the game live on the Cyclones.TV web player. The feed will be produced by the LSU Athletics Department.
