Iowa State Falls to No. 21 LSU, 1-0
BATON ROUGE, La. – A low-scoring affair came down to a matter of inches as No. 21 LSU edged out Iowa State 1-0 Saturday evening at Tiger Park. The loss dropped ISU to 14-4 on the season, while LSU improved to 14-6.
The Last Inning
After posting the first two outs of the bottom of the seventh, LSU’s All-American centerfielder AJ Andrews laid down a bunt and sped to first safely. Andrews then went for a steal to second, and Sara Davison could not hang onto the ball that rolled into the outfield and Andrews hurried over to third.
After walking Jacee Blades, ISU had Sandra Simmons on a 1-1 count when she sent a liner high towards second. Davison timed her jump, but was unable to hang onto it as Andrews sped home for the game’s only and winning run.
Iowa State left 10 on base and there were many chances where the door was open for ISU to get on the board. The Cyclones got runners on first and second in the first two innings but could not bring anyone home.
Iowa State had no fewer than four swings make it to the warning track. Three of them, two by Lexi Slater and one from Aly Cappaert resulted in outs. The fourth, by Rachel Hartman in the sixth, was off the leftfield wall, only a couple of feet from making it over. Hartman reached on a double, but the Cyclones were unable to bring the runner home.
Player of the Game
Katie Johnson. The Iowa State hurler was outstanding in defeat, seeing her record drop to 14-4. Johnson went the distance allowing five hits and an unearned run while walking three.
Iowa State wraps up the Purple & Gold Challenge tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. game against Lamar.
