Cyclones Win Three Event Titles In Outdoor Opener

TEMPE, Ariz – Three event titles on the track and three all-time top-10 performances in the men's and women's hammer throw highlighted the weekend for the Iowa State track and field teams. Hannah Willms captured the high jump title with a mark of 5 feet, 8.50 inches, while Henry Kelley moved into ninth place and Kayla Sanborn into eighth on Iowa State's all-time lists in the hammer throw. Ese Okoro and Derek Jones both took the win in the 400-meter hurdles

Willms cleared four bars en route to the title, each coming on her first attempt. Her mark of 5’8.50" is the best of her outdoor career, moving herself into eighth on Iowa State's all-time high jump list. The Waterloo, Iowa, native set an outdoor personal best with the performance. Willms’ teammate Kelly McCoy finished third in the competition with a mark of 5’7.25”.

In Friday’s action, Kelley launched a 20-plus foot personal record in the hammer throw with a distance of 180’11”. The toss is good for ninth on Iowa State’s all-time list, passing Michael Zika and Kendall Fogel. Sanborn also posted a personal best in the women’s side of competition. The Anamosa, Iowa, native hurled a best mark of 176’11”. Sanborn moves up one spot on the all-time list, passing former Cyclone great Lisa Griebel for eighth.

Ese Okoro placed first in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. Okoro broke the tape in 57.77 seconds, just .34 seconds off of her personal best. The Birmingham, England, native currently ranks sixth on Iowa State’s female top-10 list. Fellow Cyclone Krista Shoeman placed third in the event, crossing the line in 1:00.62.

Kevin Poster notched an 11-inch personal best in the men’s triple jump. The New Brighton, Minn., native leapt a best mark of 49’11.75” on the day, placing second to Minnesota’s Charles Jordan.

In the men’s 110-meter hurdles, Ryan Sander posted a time of 14.40 seconds, which was good for fourth place in the event. Sander was just off his personal record of 14.33 in the outdoor opener.

Derek Jones and Kris Brander picked up a one-two finish for the Cyclones in the men’s 400m hurdles. Jones broke the tape in a personal-best 52.07 seconds, and Brander finished close behind in 53.59. Trey Achterhoff finished fifth in 54.04.

Next Up
The Cyclones will return to the track Friday, April 4, at two meets. Iowa State will be sending athletes to both the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. and the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala.
