AMES, Iowa It is that time of year.  As most college students head for home for the Thanksgiving break, a group of Iowa State student-athletes has affirmed the desire to help others by distributing Thanksgiving meal baskets to designated Central Iowa residents.

Through the ISU Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC), Iowa State athletes raise money during the academic year to buy 16 Thanksgiving baskets that provide a full holiday meal.

“It’s nice to give back to the community and we benefit as well,” said Iowa State gymnast Ashley Kent. “We know it is important to share with others less fortunate.”

Fellow gymnast Melanie Tham said helping other invites introspection.

“This helps us appreciate what we have and opens your eyes a little bit to the way things really are,” Tham said. “It helps us realize that we are lucky.”

Iowa State student-athletes are already making plans to distribute Christmas holiday gifts to children who might not otherwise receive presents from family or friends.
