AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State gymnastics team and six of its student athletes were honored by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) with Scholastic All-America honors, the organization recently announced. After a season showing talent in competition, the Cyclones continued to get it done in the classroom.

Iowa State finished the 2012-13 academic year with a 3.26 GPA, the second-best among Big 12 gymnastics squads and only a couple hundredths behind the Big 12’s leader in the category, Oklahoma. Iowa State was one of 67 programs to receive the team academic honor.

The Cyclones’ six individual honorees were led by All-American Michelle Shealy. Along with being Iowa State’s first NCAA event finalist in six years, Shealy also recorded the top GPA on the squad with a 3.85 GPA in elementary education.

Other Iowa State honorees included Caitlin Brown, Kristen DeCosta, Henrietta Green, Sammie Pearsall and Lizzie Stranahan. The six Scholastic All-Americans were the most produced by the Cyclones since 2010, when ISU had seven honored.

To be eligible, a team must maintain a 3.0 GPA during the preceding academic year. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.5 GPA during the academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better.
