Sorenson to be Inducted to Bemidji Hall of Fame
BEMIDJI, Minn. – Iowa State head swimming and diving coach Duane Sorenson will be inducted into the Bemidji State University Athletics Hall of Fame Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014. Sorenson will also receive Alumni Coach Achievement Award honors for his tremendous success as a coach throughout the past 35 years.
Sorenson, a two-time All-American athlete (1976 and 1977) at Bemidji State, went on to coach for his alma mater under Lee Ahlbrecht as a graduate assistant during the 1979 season. From there, Sorenson went onto coach for nearly 20 years at the secondary level. During his time as a high school coach, Sorenson captured a number of conference titles, a state runner-up finish, state championship, and he received Minnesota State Coach of the Year honors in 1991.
Before coming to Iowa State, Sorenson lead the South East Metro Sharks (SEMS) Swim Club to five state championships and 11 runner-up finishes in just 20 years. During that time, 67 of his swimmers qualified for junior nationals while 25 qualified for senior nationals.
During his 16 seasons as the head coach of the Iowa State swimming and diving team, Sorenson’s athletes have received Big 12 all-conference honors an incredible 43 times. He has elevated the breaststroke program to one of the top in the Big 12 Conference, earning all-conference honors 20 times.
A testament to his ability to bring out the fullest potential in his athletes, all of Iowa State’s current school records have been broken during Sorenson’s tenure as the Cyclone’s head coach. Not only has he been a major influence on his athletes in the pool, during his time at Iowa State, his team regularly ranks at the top of the conference in academic standing. During the 2012-13 season, 16 of Sorenson’s athletes received Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors.
Sorenson’s formal hall of fame induction will take place Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014.
Sorenson looks for continued success as he enters his 17th year at the helm at Iowa State with 26 athletes returning from a year ago. The Iowa State swimming and diving team travels to Brookings, S.D. on Friday, Oct. 18 as they take on the Fighting Jackrabbits of South Dakota State in their second meet of the season.
