No. 3 Longhorns Shutout Cyclones, 3-0
AUSTIN, Texas - Freshman Anna Cole extended her career-long hitting streak to eight games Saturday as the Cyclones fell short at No. 3 Texas, 3-0. The loss moves Iowa State to 19-18 overall and 1-6 in Big 12 play. Texas improves to 36-4 and continues its perfect run through the league at 8-0.
Facing Texas ace Blaire Luna (21-2), the Cyclones managed two hits against the sophomore who threw her 20th complete game of the season and league-high 12th shutout. Luna entered the day with a 0.96 ERA and remained true to form, surrendering a two-out single to Dalyn Varela in the fourth and Cole's hit, a one-out double in the fifth.
Luna struck out 11 batters and walked no one through her seven innings of work Saturday.
Senior Rachel Zabriskie (12-12) took the hard-fought loss for Iowa State. Zabriskie pitched five innings, allowing eight hits, three runs and striking out two. Most impressive though, were the zero walks allowed by the Cyclone, only the eighth time in 28 appearances this season in which Zabriskie has not walked a batter and the first time in conference play.
Junior Lauren Kennewell threw a scoreless sixth inning, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Amy Hooks, who entered the game hitting .350 for Texas, posted all three Longhorn RBIs in the game. In the first, Hooks doubled home Lexy Bennett before smashing a two-run home run in the bottom of the third with two outs to give Texas the 3-0 advantage.
On Sunday, the Cyclones and Longhorns will complete their season series with a noon CDT first pitch.
