AMES, Iowa – Cyclones Aly Cappaert and Lexi Slater had banner days at the plate on Monday, combining for seven hits and 11 RBI, as Iowa State (21-29, 4-11 Big 12) swept its doubleheader with UMKC (16-24, 5-6 Summit) by scores of 10-4 and 7-4 at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

Both Cappaert and Slater hit home runs in the opening game against the Kangaroos, including Slater’s second career grand slam. Cappaert, who was 3-for-3 at the plate before flying out in her final plate appearance, hit two doubles and a solo home before Slater’s slam plated the final four runs of the game. Maddie Reese also contributed two runs on her third homer of the season.

In the second game, Cappaert hit her second homer of the day, a two-run long ball to left, that put Iowa State up by three in the fifth and Slater’s three-run double in the sixth broke a 4-4 tie, completing the day’s scoring.

In game one, Emily Ott hit a 1-2 pitch from Tori Torrescano into the dirt just in front of home plate in the top of the first and, although Torrescano rushed in to field the ball and toss it to catcher Hally Lenzine, the throw was not in time to stop Brooke Parker from scoring and putting UMKC up by a run.

The Cyclone offense came through with three runs in the second when Cappaert doubled home Sara Davison, who led off the inning with a single up the middle, and Reese blasted a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for a 3-1 Cyclone lead.

UMKC tied the score in the top of the fourth, pinch runner Kristi Lee scoring on a groundout from Katie Kelley and Alexandra Friloux driving in the tying run with a single to right field. However, Sarah Hawryluk broke the tie in the bottom of the frame with a grounder to second, driving in Alex Tinaglia who entered to run for Cappaert after Cappaert doubled to start the Iowa State offensive turn.

Tied at four heading to the bottom of the sixth, Cappaert was the first Cyclone up to bat and connected for her third home run of the season to put Iowa State up one. Erica Miller would drive in the sixth run for the Cyclones on a sacrifice fly to right before Slater delivered with a four-bagger to left to put the ‘Roos into a hole too deep to climb out of with three outs remaining.

Torrescano (11-12) earned the win with seven innings in the circle, giving up four runs on eight hits, walking two with a strikeout.

UMKC starter Deanna Friese (11-11) took the loss after allowing 10 runs on 10 hits, walking six and fanning three batters in five and one-thirds innings of work.

Two runs by Iowa State in the third inning of game two on an RBI-single from Hawryluk and a Kangaroo error, were the only runs to cross until UMKC got an unearned run back in the top of the fifth to cut the two-run lead in half.

Cappaert’s second home run of the day built the Iowa State lead to three, but UMKC rallied in the top of the following inning, plating two runs on a Bri Wyatt triple, and Wyatt came home on a Cyclone throwing error for the 4-4 tie.

Slater came up big again with the bases loaded in the Iowa State sixth with a two-out, three-run double to put Iowa State back on top for good, 7-4.

Junior Taylor Smith (8-9) was solid in the circle, despite a rough sixth inning. Smith threw a complete game, allowing four runs, three earned, while giving up six hits and walking two batters. She also struck out two.

Cinda Ramos (4-11) absorbed the loss after being charged with nine hits, seven runs – six earned – two walks and no strikeouts.

The Cyclones will play their annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game at Iowa on Wednesday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m. CDT.
