BATON ROUGE, La. – Lamar was able to score two runs in the top of the seventh inning, allowing the Cardinals to prevail over Iowa State 3-2 Friday morning in the first game of the Purple & Gold Challenge at Tiger Park. The loss dropped Iowa State to 12-3 on the season.

Story of the Game
Iowa State fell behind in the first, but made quick work in the second inning to take the lead. Aly Cappaert, Lexi Slater and Rachel Hartman all started out the bottom of the second with singles, Cappaert to center, Slater and Hartman both to left. With the bases loaded and no outs, Jorden Spendlove looked ready to clear the bases, but her blooper to right fell about six inches foul. The next pitch she chopped back to the pitcher to start a 1-2-3 double play.

The Cyclones were now under pressure, going from bases loaded and no outs to runners on second and third with two outs. However, ISU’s leader in RBIs, Sara Rice stepped up and made the big hit with a single through the right side that scored Slater and a charging Hartman to put the Cyclones ahead 2-1.

Both pitchers began to settle into the game and neither team could get much offense going. With two outs in the seventh, Lamar started a rally with Jenna Holland recording a single. Casey Cromwell tied the game on the next pitch with a big shot-double to left-center field off the wall. ISU’s throw home was late to tie the game. The next batter, Julianne Viator brought home the winning run on the next at-bat with a single to left field, making it 3-2 Cardinals.

Player of the Game
Sara Rice. The Cyclone third baseman had the biggest hit of the game in the bottom of the second inning, with her two-RBI single giving Iowa State an early 2-1 lead. The two runs batted in gave her 17 RBIs on the season. Coming into her senior year, Rice only had 16 RBIs in her Iowa State career in her first three seasons.

On Deck
Iowa State returns to Tiger Park later today for a 2 p.m. game against Jackson State.
