ISU Second at Big 12 Champs., Santerre Bars Champ
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State gymnastics team (5-11 overall, 2-2 Big 12) took second at the Big 12 Championships with a season-high score of 196.650 and crowned senior Camille Santerre-Gervais as the Big 12 champion on uneven bars with a score of 9.95. Santerre-Gervais also was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Year following the meet. The Cyclones' score assured them of a spot in the NCAA Regionals on Apr. 5.
Three other Cyclones joined Santerre-Gervais on the All-Big Championship Team. Junior Caitlin Brown took second place in the all-around with a career-high 39.350. Milan Ivory and Henrietta Green also earned Big 12 Championship Team honors on floor with scores of 9.9.
Seniors Ivory and Green came up huge for Iowa State in the fifth and sixth spots on floor exercise. The duo both put up scores of 9.900 to lead the way for the Cyclones and put them in a tie for third-place in the event. Brown, a junior, followed closely with a score of 9.850. Kristen DeCosta and Hailey Johnson both scored 9.800 in what was truly a team effort in Iowa State's third rotation. They put up a score of 49.250 on floor.
Entering the final rotation, Iowa State needed a score of 48.550 to punch their ticket to NCAA Regionals. The Cyclones shattered their previous season high on vault (48.800) with a team score of 49.175 to punch their ticket to regionals. Ivory led the way with 9.875, tying the best score of her career. Green and Brown followed with scores of 9.85, a new career-high for Green. Alex Marasco also set a career-high with a score of 9.825.
Camile Santerre-Gervais picked a great time to hit the highest score of her career on beam. The senior shattered her previous career-high (9.825) with a 9.875 in the anchor position for Iowa State. She was not the only Cyclone to shine in the second rotation of the meet, though. Brown (9.85), Ivory (9.825) and Marasco (9.8) were also keys the Iowa State's 49.125 team score on the apparatus.
Uneven Parallel Bars
The Cyclones came up big in the first rotation, led by Santerre-Gervais, a senior, in the anchor position. Santerre-Gervais tied a career-high with a 9.95, the third time this season she has hit that score. Her 9.95 is also tied for the school record for highest score on uneven bars, a mark only four other Iowa State gymnasts have hit. Green (9.85) and Brown (9.8) followed with a Iowa State's second and third-best scores. The Cyclones put up a team score of 49.100 on bars.
The Cyclones will await to see their destination for NCAA Regionals on Saturday, April 5.
