Three Cyclones Earn All-Big 12 Honors
AMES, Iowa – Three members of the Iowa State softball team were bestowed with postseason honors from the Big 12, the conference announced Tuesday. Outfielders Sarah Hawryluk and Brittany Gomez were named to the All-Big 12 Second Team, while Jorden Spendlove was named to the Big 12 All-Defensive team for her work at first base.
Gomez, a sophomore, made an appearance on the All-Big 12 Second Team for the second consecutive season. This is the first Big 12 postseason honor for Hawryluk and Spendlove.
Hawryluk, a senior from Spruce Grove, Alberta, was ISU’s top hitter in conference play, amassing a .407 batting average from the No. 2 spot with a team-high 22 hits, 10 being for extra bases. One of six players in the league to hit over .400 in conference play, Hawryluk’s 22 hits tied for second in the league and she joined Oklahoma’s Georgia Casey as the only player with more than one triple in conference competition. Hawryluk also took care of business in the field, not committing an error in Big 12 play.
Gomez, from New Braunfels, Texas, put up one of the top offensive seasons in Iowa State history in 2014. The sophomore finished 2014 with a .397 batting average, the third-highest for a season in ISU history and 75 hits, second-most in program history. Gomez’s Big 12 numbers slated her with a .368 batting average, 10th in conference play, and 21 hits. Gomez became ISU’s all-time stolen bases leader with 55 in her career, 24 coming this season.
Spendlove, a junior from San Antonio, was one of three Big 12 first basemen to be named to the Big 12 All-Defensive team, joined by Kansas’ Maddie Stein and Oklahoma’s Brittany Williams. Having moved from left field to first base in the off-season, Spendlove started all 55 games for the Cyclones at first in 2014. She finished the season with 323 putouts and 10 assists with a .968 fielding percentage. Spendlove has done all of that while continuing to maintain a quality bat in the ISU lineup, finishing the season with a .338 batting average.
Spendlove is the second ISU player to be named to an All-Defensive Team. Lexi Slater was named to the All-Defensive Team last season.
