AMES, Iowa – Senior libero Kristen Hahn has earned much recognition for her ability on the court as a two-time AVCA All-American and two-time Big 12 Libero of the Year. Wednesday, she was recognized for her efforts off the court as she was named one of 30 candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate volleyball.

On the court, Hahn has been one of the most outstanding players to come through the Iowa State program and has continued Iowa State’s tradition of being one of the top defensive teams in the country. The Cedar Rapids native became the first player in Iowa State history to record back-to-back 600 dig seasons last year. She comes into the 2013 season as a unanimous Preseason All-Big 12 selection, and has won the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week award 12 times in her distinguished career. She has done all of this following in the footsteps of three-time All-American libero Ashley Mass.

Off the court, Hahn has been as outstanding. A kinesiology major, Hahn maintains a 3.42 GPA and has been a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and a 2012 CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District choice. She has also been very active in the community, taking part in Iowa State Athletics’ “Adopt-a-Family” program during the holiday season and Dance Marathon. Along with the rest of the ISU volleyball team, Hahn works at the Iowa Special Olympics each year.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2013 NCAA Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship in December.
