Iowa State Returns Home to Face TCU

AMES, Iowa - After taking on two ranked opponents on the road in consecutive matches, the Iowa State volleyball team returns home Saturday to take on TCU in a 5 p.m. match at Hilton Coliseum.

Fans with a football ticket from the game against Oklahoma State earlier in the day can receive $2 tickets at the Hilton Coliseum ticket office.

The match will be shown live on Cyclones.TV. Fans can also follow the match via live stats, and the interactive live blog.

  • Coming off its first win over a ranked opponent in 2013, the Iowa State volleyball team returns to Hilton Coliseum for a match-up against TCU Saturday at 5 p.m. The match will be shown live on Cyclones.TV.
  • The Cylones’ Wednesday match against No. 22 Kansas was a close encounter throughout the entirety with ISU coming out on top 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 16-25, 15-13.
  • Tenisha Matlock was dominant in the attack, leading Iowa State with 18 kills at a .417 hitting percentage. She was joined by Victoria Hurtt (14 kills) and Ciara Capezio (12) in double figures. Capezio had a double-double with 10 digs. Kristen Hahn led the ISU defense with 35 digs, and the Cyclones out-blocked Kansas, who was previously No. 1 in the Big 12 in blocks per set, 12.0-to-10.0.
  • The Cyclones went on a blocking spree in the fifth set against the Jayhawks, recording 5.5 of their 12.0 blocks in the final frame. ISU, who has been last in the Big 12 in blocks per set the entire season, had more blocks in the fifth set than in eight of its previous 16 total matches.
  • Kristen Hahn continues to be one of the best liberos in the coutnry. The senior leads the Big 12 and is ranked sixth nationally with 5.74 digs per set. She has won the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week award three times this season, bringing her career total to 15 awards, tying the conference record.
  • Iowa State has been one of the best serving teams in the country. The Cyclones, as they have for the entirety of the 2013 season, lead the Big 12 in service aces per set (1.55 per set) and are among the leaders in total aces in spite of playing the second-fewest sets in the league this year.
  • ISU has three of the top seven servers in the Big 12 at its disposal. Middle blocker Tory Knuth leads the Big 12 at 0.45 aces per set, Ciara Capezio ranks third at 0.31 aces per set and Caitlin Nolan ranks seventh at 0.27 aces per frame.
  • Five of Iowa State’s six losses have come to teams with an RPI in the top-25. Those losses were to Texas (No. 1), Nebraska (No. 13), Oklahoma (No. 15), San Diego (No. 20) and Illinois (No. 25). At No. 53 in the RPI, St. Mary’s is ISU’s other loss in 2013.

About TCU

  • The TCU Horned Frogs come into Saturday’s match with a 13-8 overall record, 2-5 in Big 12 play, after dropping a tough five-set match at home to Oklahoma Wednesday.
  • The Frogs were led by freshman outside hitter Ashley Smith, who had 17 kills. Preseason All-Big 12 selection Yvonne Igodan chipped in with 12 kills and freshman Natalie Gower added 11.
  • The TCU defense was led by libero Shane Peters’ 27 digs with Sutton Sunstrom adding 18 digs and Alexia Heist 13.
  • TCU runs a two-setter system with Alexia Heist and Trisha Langley both playing as back-row setters.
  • Igodan, a senior, is the leader of the TCU attack with 2.70 kills per set at a .319 hitting percentage. Smith averages 2.74 kills per set and also chips in 1.72 digs per set.
  • The match will be between the two best serving squads in the Big 12. The Frogs rank second in the league in aces per set. The setters, Heist and Langley, are TCU’s top servers with Heist at 19 aces on the year and Langley at 21.
  • This will mark the third time Iowa State and TCU have played all-time, both meetings coming last year. ISU won both matches in three-set sweeps.
