AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team made it to a season-best five-match winning streak Tuesday night as the Cyclones defeated the South Dakota Coyotes 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-22) in Hilton Coliseum. The win moves Iowa State to 15-6 overall and the loss dropped South Dakota to 18-9.

Turning Point of the Match
In spite of being a non-conference opponent thrown right into the middle of the Big 12 schedule, South Dakota showed it was worthy of being on the same court as Iowa State right off the bat. With the score at 13-11, Tory Knuth put away one of her patented quick-set kills, and allowed herself, the Big 12’s best server to head back to the service line to fire off four consecutive points, which included a service ace.

After the Coyotes reeled off two straight points, Iowa State put together another 5-0 run, this time on the serving of Mackenzie Bigbee and the attacking prowess of Ciara Capezio. After that the Cyclones were up 23-13 and out of sight in the first set.

Cyclone Match Ball Goes to…
Ciara Capezio. A talking point recently has been the lack of recognition that Capezio had been getting for her stellar freshman campaign. She has not been recognized as Big 12 Freshman of the Week at all this season in spite of being one of only a few freshmen to be playing all six rotations, much less as freshman who was also among the league leaders in service aces and just outside the top-10 in kills and digs.

Part of the reason for that is that while she has been amazingly consistent. In the last 14 matches coming into Tuesday, only twice did she average fewer than three kills a set in a match, but she only averaged more than four per set on two occasions. Weekly conference awards go to the outstanding performances of a week, not always an outstanding performer. On Tuesday it was Capezio, an outstanding performer, who had an outstanding performance.

The freshman led all attackers with 19 kills, the second-most of her career (22 at UNI), and converting at an outstanding .593 hitting percentage, the sixth-highest by a freshman in Iowa State history. Capezio was a machine out of the gates, recording eight kills on 11 attempts in the first frame.

Capezio contributed in other areas too, recording a team-high two service aces, five digs and a solo block.

Honorable mention to Mackenzie Bigbee, who was strong with 13 kills and six digs, Jenelle Hudson, who had her third straight double-double with 41 assists and a match-high 17 digs and to Victoria Hurtt, who came back strong after being shut out in the first set to post nine kills.
