AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team (8-5, 0-0 Big 12) lost to No. 72 Drake (8-2, 0-0 Missouri Valley) on Friday night, 5-2.

“[Drake] came out and they had a lot of energy and they played well,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “Bottom line, they played better than we did.”

An 8-3 win from junior Ksenia Pronina and freshman Samantha Budai at No. 1 doubles was quickly paired with an 8-3 loss for senior Emma Waites and junior Caroline Andersen at the No. 3 spot for the Cyclones. The doubles point came down to junior Meghan Cassens and sophomore Ana Gasparovic at the No. 2 slot. Drake took the point with a win at No. 2 from Jordan Eggleston and Nell Boyd, 8-7(4).

Pronina faced Drake’s Klavdija Rebol at No. 1 singles, coming out with a quick win for the Cyclones, 6-4, 6-4. Waites took down Lea Kozulic at the No. 6 spot, 6-0, 6-2.

“[Waites] just went out and made them play,” Armando Espinosa said. “She played hard and she made them play one more ball after one more ball.”

Budai made her return to the courts at No.2 singles after dealing with tendinitis pain last week. She fought a tough match against Mariel Ante, playing forced tie breakers in the first two sets. Ante took the match, 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 6-3.

Gasparovic played a lengthy three-set match as well, battling it out with Nell Boyd. Boyd took the match, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.

Iowa State will start Big 12 play at home next weekend, taking on Kansas at 3 p.m. Friday before Kansas State at 11 a.m. Sunday.
