Cyclones To Compete In First Southern Scuffle

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State wrestling team (6-1 overall, 1-0 Big 12) will ring in the New Year for the first time in school history at the nation’s premier holiday tournament, the Southern Scuffle.

Where: Chattanoga, Tenn. – McKenzie Arena (10,928)
When: Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 1-2, 8 a.m. CDT

Cyclone Notebook
- 34 All-Americans are in the field for the 2014 Southern Scuffle, including two Cyclones in junior’s Kyven Gadson and Michael Moreno, who each sit on the cusp of career milestones.
- Gadson heads into the tournament ranked No. 2 at 197 pounds with a career record of 39-7, one win shy of career victory No. 40.
- Moreno heads into the new year ranked No. 6 at 165 pounds with a career record of 48-26, one win shy of career victory No. 50.
- Senior John Nicholson is anticipated to be back in the lineup for the Cyclones at 157 pounds. Nicholson, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, was forced to injury default out of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational back on Dec. 6-7 and has not wrestled since.
- The younger brother of All-American Michael, freshman Gabe Moreno, is fresh off his first bonus point dual win over D-1 opponents. Moreno dominanted from start to finish in a 12-2 major decision over NDSU’s .
- Moreno took 7th at 141-pounds in the Cliff Keen Invite and has won six of his last seven matches dating back to the
- Sophomore Tanner Weatherman heads into the tournament ranked No. 12 at 174 pounds by InterMat. The Huxley, Iowa, native is 12-6 on the year and took down No. 17 Hayden Zillmer of NDSU in his last outing on Dec. 14.
- Former OTC resident Earl Hall is a dark horse in the field at 125 pounds. Hall, who is ranked as No. 12 in W.I.N. Magazine’s latest poll, leads the Cyclones in pins this season with four.
- No. 9 Boaz Beard returned to the lineup at 184 pounds on Dec. 14 against NDSU after being sidelined with an elbow injury the entire season up to that point.

Scouting The Tournament Field
- Four NCAA champions, eight NCAA finalist, 34 All-Americans and 135 NCAA-qualifiers are set to compete in the loaded tournament field at the Scuffle.
- Returning champions include: No. 3 Nico Megaludis (Penn State) at 125 pounds, No. 4 Jon Morrison (Oklahoma State) at 133 pounds, No. 6 Mike Nevinger (Cornell) at 141 pounds, No. 1 David Taylor (Penn State) at 165 pounds, No. 2 Chris Perry (Oklahoma State) at 174 pounds, and No. 1 Ed Ruth (Penn State) at 184 pounds.
- 13 teams that finished in the top-25 at the 2013 NCAA Championships are in the tournament field for the 2014 Southern Scuffle.
