Iowa State is off to a strong start to its spring campaign. The Cyclones hosted a tournament on April 5 at Hilton Coliseum, winning eight of nine sets over Omaha, Nebraska-Kearney and UNI. Last weekend, ISU returned to the court at UNI for a tournament. The Cyclones were good again in two-set matches against Omaha, Iowa, Minnesota and the Iowa Ice.
ISU returns the majority of its hitters from the 2013 squad that went to Iowa State’s eighth consecutive NCAA Volleyball Championship. The Cyclones have received strong performances from 2012 Honorable Mention All-American Victoria Hurtt, 2013 Honorable Mention All-American Mackenzie Bigbee and Morgan Kuhrt, who led ISU with 24 kills at an over .500 hitting percentage.
Iowa State was one of the top serving teams in the nation last season and have continued that form in the spring season, posting over 40 service aces combined across the two weekends of play. They have done this even with the absence of the Big 12’s top server from 2013, Tory Knuth, who has been recovering from off-season surgery.
Creighton went 23-9 and 12-4 in the BIG EAST in 2013. The Bluejays appeared in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship game and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Volleyball Championship before bowing out to Kansas. CU returns all but one squad member from its 2013 team, including a pair of AVCA Honorable Mention All-Americans in rising seniors Kelli Browning (a two-time AVCA Honorable Mention All-American) and Michelle Sicner.
Iowa State will close out its spring season Saturday at Hilton Coliseum against Nebraska at 2 p.m. Admission to the match is free. The match will be shown live on Cyclones.TV Powered by Mediacom and the Cyclones.TV web player.
