Cyclone Signees Named Gatorade Athlete Of The Year
AMES, Iowa - Two members of the 2014 Iowa State track and field recruiting class were named Gatorade’s 2014 Track and Field Athlete of the Year in their respective states. Dan Curts (Maine) and Josh Evans (Iowa) each earned the brand’s recognition for the second time in their high school careers.
Curts captured three state titles at this year’s Class B state championship meet, leading his high school team to a third-place overall finish. Curts, Maine’s 2012-13 Gatorade Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, took home crowns in the 800-meter run, 1,600m and 3,200, setting a meet-record of 4:09.88 in the 1,600m. The Ellsworth, Maine, native clocked a time of 8:51.24 in the Loucks Games’ 3,200m, breaking the state record to notch the No. 5 showing in the nation.
Evans also took home three individual state titles and while also anchoring a sprint medley championship at the 2014 Iowa High School Boys’ State Track and Field Championships, leading Linn-Mar to a second-place team finish. Evans was the first across the line in the 800m (1:50.98), the 1,600m and the 3,200-meter run, setting meet records in the latter two races with times of 4:06.32 and 9:00.97. Evans, Iowa’s returning Gatorade Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year, notched a meet record in the 1,600m at the Drake Relays, clocking a time of 4:10.76 and took fourth at the New York Diamond League adidas Boys’ Dream Mile with a time of 4:04.38.
Both athletes will be competing for the Cardinal and Gold in 2014-15 as members of the program’s first recruiting class under director of track and field and cross country Martin Smith.
