SAAC to Host First Annual "CAN HUNGER" Event
AMES, Iowa - Iowa State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be hosting a canned food drive before the Iowa State-Iowa men’s basketball game Friday night at Hilton Coliseum. SAAC has teamed up with the Iowa Corn Growers Association and the Iowa Food Bank for the event they call “CAN HUNGER”.
The idea behind the event is to raise awareness and bring in lots of food donations to help those who need it most in the state of Iowa. It is the first year of the event and SAAC is hoping for a large following and a lot of donations. SAAC Co-President Clint Martin is in charge of the event.
“It’s the first year of the event so any donations will make the event a success,” Martin said. “We want to reach a lot of fans and get a large group donating, whether it is students or adults.”
Martin decided to take the lead on the project because of some of the great things he had heard other schools were doing at last year’s annual Big 12 SAAC conference in Norman, Okla. He brought back the idea for a canned food drive to Ames.
“I thought it could be something we could have great success with, so I took the reins to get in contact with those who could make it a reality,” Martin said.
Fans attending the game, as well as students, are highly encouraged to get involved with the event.
Student-athletes will be walking around the concourse collecting donations before the game. The first 500 people to donate will also receive t-shirts courtesy of the Iowa Corn Growers Association.
