AMES, Iowa – Iowa State was one of three Big 12 teams awarded the 2011-12 American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, the AVCA announced Friday. In all, 102 Division I women’s volleyball teams were honored.
The Cyclones earned a 3.43 team grade-point average last season and put 10 players on the Big 12 All-Academic teams, including eight first team honorees. The team excelled on the court as well, advancing to its sixth-straight NCAA Tournament and second Elite Eight in four years.
Kansas and Kansas State also represented the Big 12 on the list.
The AVCA Team Academic Award recognizes both boys and girls volleyball teams from all levels of competition who maintain at least a 3.30 GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 GPA on a 5.0 scale. A record 533 teams were honored this year.
Iowa State begins its 2012 season Aug. 24 at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., facing teams from host Tennessee, Cincinnati and Florida State.
