Rachel Hockaday Blogs From FCAV
Cyclone senior outside hitter Rachel Hockaday is headed to Huntington Beach, Calif. this summer to work with Fellowship of Christian Athletes Volleyball. Throughout the summer, Hockaday will blog about her time with FCAV, giving Iowa State fans an inside look at one student-athlete's summer plans.
Well, it’s been a week out here in California, and now I can say with 100% certainty that this really is going to be an experience of a lifetime. I’ve only been here for a short time, but it feels as though I’ve known the other interns and the staff my whole life. The love that they have for each other, us and the people around them is incredible, and I’m definitely learning a lot already.
When I landed the very first day, we hit the beach and played some sand volleyball. I have never seen so many sand courts in my entire life! Sand volleyball is a lot of fun but definitely more difficult than indoor- it’s going to take some time to get used to.
The staff surprised us on the first night and told us we were going to St. George, Utah for a few days to get to know each other, relax and bond before we headed back to a busy summer in Huntington Beach. The drive out there was amazing. We drove through Vegas, through the desert and the mountains, but I think the best part was getting to know the other interns and hearing each one of their stories. By the time we got to Utah, I felt like I had known these girls all my life. My favorite part of St. George was when we went to Zion National Park and climbed Angel’s Landing, a huge mountain in the area. It was mind blowing! I wouldn’t call myself a nature person, but this experience made me realize how beautiful God’s creation is.
During our trip, the staff gave us an overview of what our schedule will look like week-to-week. We will train for a few weeks, and then we will start running camps. In the meantime, we will be playing a lot of sand volleyball and in the gym lifting weights. All of us are going through a workbook together this summer called the Genesis Process and also some other Bible studies that will help us develop an even stronger walk with Christ.
It has been really neat to see so many different people involved with FCA Volleyball. People of all ages want to join and play a part in the ministry out here in California. To be honest, I didn’t know much about it before I got out here, but now I can see how God is working and moving through these people. I can already see God developing leaders around me. He is good and is doing some incredible things in my own life and in the lives of those around me.
Until next time!
