AMES, Iowa – Freshman right side hitter Mackenzie Bigbee was named the AVCA Central Region Freshman of the Year on Tuesday, the AVCA has announced. Kristen Hahn and Alison Landwehr were selected to the all-region team and Victoria Hurtt and Jamie Straube earned honorable mention nods.

Averaging 2.81 kills per set and hitting .246 for the Cyclones in her debut season, Bigbee was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year earlier this season and was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team. Bigbee tied an Iowa State freshman record during non-conference play, tallying 25 kills at No. 19 Illinois. On the year, Bigbee has 304 kills in 28 matches, becoming just the second Cyclone freshman to cross the 300-kill threshold.

Hahn, an all-region and all-American honorable mention last season, was selected to the all-region team for the first time in her career after being named the Big 12 Libero of the Year for the second-straight year. The junior broke a league record this season with eight weekly awards and boasts 12 such awards in her career, third all-time in Big 12 history. Hahn was the only league player with more than 5.00 digs per set during conference play, averaging 1.00 more digs per set than the second-place player, at an average of 5.84 digs per set.

The Big 12 Setter of the Year, Landwehr receives her second all-region team honor after being named to the team following the 2011 team as well. Landwehr, who was an AVCA First Team All-American in 2011, was tops in the Big 12 this season with a conference average of 11.93 assists per set and tied a career-high with 66 assists in Iowa State’s upset win over No. 3 Texas on senior day. She was also one of two Cyclones, along with Straube, to be named a candidate for the 2012 Senior CLASS Award.

Hurtt has been the Cyclones’ go-to offensive threat this season, averaging 3.45 kills per set and 3.64 points per set during Big 12 play, ranking in the top-10 in both categories. Through the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Hurtt is averaging 3.05 kills per set, leading the Cyclone offense.

Straube garners her third all-region nod after being named to the all-region team in 2010 and 2011. The two-time AVCA All-American honorable mention hit .294 in her senior season, averaging 2.33 kills per set. One of Iowa State’s most decorated athletes, Straube was also named the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Each of the four AVCA All-Region honorees was also named to the All-Big 12 first team. Hahn and Hurtt were unanimous all-conference selections.

The No. 18 Cyclones are on the road this week, traveling to Berkeley, Calif. to play No. 2 Stanford in the NCAA Regional Semifinal round on Friday, Dec. 7, at 9 p.m. CST.
