AMES, Iowa – Iowa State volleyball assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Jon Newman-Gonchar, has been named an AVCA Thirty Under 30 recipient for the second time in his career, the American Volleyball Coaches Association announced Thursday night.
Newman-Gonchar joined the Cyclone volleyball staff earlier this year after serving in the same capacity at Loyola-Marymount from 2010-12 where he helped the Lions to the NCAA Tournament in 2012, the team’s first postseason appearance since 2005. Prepvolleyball recognized his 2011 and 2012 recruiting classes as Highest Honorable Mentions.
It was during his three-year stint as an assistant coach at UC-San Diego that Newman-Gonchar was first awarded a Thirty Under 30 nod. During his tenure at UCSD, the Tritons made three-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament while posting a combined 70-18 record.
In addition to his work at the collegiate level, Newman-Gonchar has worked on the national stage with the USA Volleyball, Gold Medal Squared, USA A2 and USA High Performance programs.
The AVCA Thirty Under 30 awards were first handed out in 2009 and honor up-and-coming coaches at all levels of the sport. Of the 30 recipients of this year’s awards, 18 are assistant coaches and nine work with Division I women’s volleyball programs.
Newman-Gonchar will coach his first match with the Cyclones when the spring season kicks off on March 28 at 6:30 p.m. CST when Iowa State plays Creighton at Harlan High School.
