AMES, Iowa – Iowa State freshman Ciara Capezio earned her first career Big 12 Weekly Award as she was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week Monday afternoon. Capezio is the fifth Cyclone all-time to be named the conference’s Rookie of the Week, joining Jamie Straube (2009), Hannah Willms (2011), Mackenzie Bigbee and Andie Malloy (both 2012).

In Iowa State’s sweep of South Dakota last Tuesday, Capezio had one of the best matches by a freshman in Iowa State history. She dominated the Coyotes with 19 kills at a career-high .593 hitting percentage. She also contributed to the Cyclone cause with five digs, two service aces and one solo block.

She followed that up in ISU’s sweep of Oklahoma with 11 kills, nine digs and a service ace. Of Capezio’s 11 kills, the 14th time this season she has had at least 10 kills, seven came in the first set against the Sooners.

Capezio, one of the top contenders for Big 12 Freshman of the Year, is on the verge of completing one of the best debut seasons in Iowa State history. Her 241 kills, 645 attempts, 29 service aces and 288.0 points all rank in the top-10 for most in a freshman season in Iowa State history and her 192 digs has her within striking distance of another top-10 list.

Capezio and the Cyclones return to the court Wednesday for a match at West Virginia. First serve is slated for 5:30 p.m. CST.
