ISU Closes Spring Season vs. Huskers at Hilton
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team will close out its spring season Saturday with a match-up in Hilton Coliseum against Nebraska. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission to the match is free with doors opening at 1 p.m.
This will be ISU’s second match in three days as the Cyclones fell to Creighton in four sets Thursday night in Carroll. With Mackenzie Bigbee not suiting up, the Iowa State attack was led by 14 kills each from Morgan Kuhrt and Ciara Capezio. A rising sophomore, Capezio also had 14 digs and two service aces.
Samara West also impressed for the Cyclones Thursday night, as she posted her 10 kills at a .500 hitting percentage. West, who will be a redshirt freshman during the 2014 season, also chipped in with seven block assists and two service aces.
Iowa State’s opponent on Saturday will be old Big Eight/Big 12 nemesis Nebraska. The Cornhuskers finished 2013 with a 26-7 record and advanced to the Regional Final where their season ended at the hands of Texas in three sets. NU returns the majority of the squad, including three All-Americans in AVCA Third-Team All-American Kadie Rolfzen and honorable mention choices Meghan Haggerty and Mary Pollmiller.
The Huskers, who will be playing their first spring match of 2014, will be looking to replace one of their best players from 2013 as three-time All-American and 2013 Big Ten Player of the Year Kelsey Robinson has graduated.
