Iowa State Announces 2014 Volleyball Schedule
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State announced its full, 27-match regular season schedule for the 2014 season Wednesday. The slate includes 14 home matches, highlighted by the previously announced AVCA Showcase match-ups to start the season against Stanford on Aug. 29 and Florida State on Aug. 31.
The Cardinal and Seminoles are two of four teams that made it to the 2013 NCAA Regional Semifinals on the Cyclones’ 2014 slate. Big 12 foes Texas, who made it to the National Semifinals, and Kansas also made it to the second weekend of the NCAA Volleyball Championship last season.
Iowa State starts the home season off with five consecutive home matches. The Iowa State Challenge will take place Sept. 4-6, featuring matches against Omaha on Sept. 4, Tennessee on Sept. 5 and Northern Illinois on Sept. 6. The Mavericks of Omaha and the Cyclones will be playing for the first time since 1991. UT and NIU are making trips to Ames after Iowa State made previous non-conference trips to the two schools, visiting Knoxville, Tennessee in 2012 and DeKalb, Illinois in 2011. The visit of Tennessee marks the first SEC opponent to come to Hilton Coliseum since 2003, when both Auburn and Kentucky paid visits to Ames.
ISU will then make the short trip north to Minneapolis to take part in the Diet Coke Classic, which ISU previously competed in back in 2009. The Cyclones will open against Milwaukee on Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m. before playing a Sept. 13 doubleheader against Tulsa at noon and hosts Minnesota at 7 p.m.
The Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series matchup against the Iowa Hawkeyes will take place at Hilton Coliseum this season on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. New Iowa head coach Bond Shymansky will be making his return to Ames after serving as an assistant coach for the Cyclones in 1998 and 1999.
For the second consecutive season, ISU will travel to Cedar Falls to take on UNI on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. The Cyclones and Panthers played out a five-set classic last season in front of a McLeod Center-record 6,621 fans, with Iowa State coming out on top.
Iowa State will open up Big 12 play with a pair of conference road trips. The Cyclones will start out on Saturday, Sept. 27 at TCU, and will follow that with the renewal of the Big 12’s premier volleyball rivalry on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at Texas. The Longhorns are the defending Big 12 champions after running the table with a 16-0 conference record last year. UT’s last conference loss came to Iowa State at Hilton Coliseum in 2012.
Texas-Iowa State will occupy the first day of the calendar in both October and November as the Longhorns will make the return trip to Ames on Saturday, Nov. 1 at a time to be determined. The UT-ISU game is one of three matchups with undetermined start times that will be announced after Iowa State home football game start times are announced. The ISU volleyball team will also be at home on Homecoming Saturday as the Cyclones take on Oklahoma on Oct. 11, and the final regular season home game against Baylor on Saturday, Nov. 29 will coincide with ISU’s football home finale against West Virginia.
The regular season finale against Baylor will not be the final volleyball games at Hilton Coliseum in 2014. Iowa State will be hosting one of the four NCAA Regional Semifinals and Finals on Dec. 12-13. Should ISU make the NCAA Volleyball Championship, it will be guaranteed a spot in the Ames Regional bracket, meaning the Cyclones could play for a trip to the NCAA Volleyball Championship in Oklahoma City on its own home floor should they advance to the Regional Semifinals.
All times listed on the full schedule here are central time and are subject to change.
Full season ticket prices and information will be released at a later date. Tickets to the NCAA Regional Semifinals and Finals are not part of the season ticket package, and information on buying those tickets will be released separately, and at a later date.
