Hilton Magic isn't reserved for just the basketball programs at Iowa State as the nationally-ranked volleyball team also calls Hilton Coliseum home.
A recently-revised setup has turned Hilton Coliseum into a fan-friendly arena, with capacity trimmed down to 8,524 when the Cyclone volleyball team takes the court. Cyclone fans have shown up in record numbers, with ISU ranking 11th in the country in attendance in 2012. Since 2005, attendance at ISU volleyball matches has increased by over 150 percent.
Iowa State set a State of Iowa record in 2009 as 10,203 fans poured into Hilton Coliseum to watch the Cyclones face Nebraska in a Big 12 matchup.
Hilton Coliseum has become one of the most feared venues in the Big 12, with ISU winning 86% of their home matches over the last three years. The Cyclones posted a 14-1 record at home in 2012.
Iowa State has hosted the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds in both 2011 and 2012 and is 6-0 lifetime at home in NCAA Tournament matches.
Renovations to Hilton occurred in the fall of 2010 following summer flooding that damaged much of Hilton. Included in the renovations, is a new locker room attached to a brand new team room where the team gathers to watch film, have meetings and study. The new media system located in the team room has vastly improved Iowa State’s film reviewing capabilities and the computers in the space allow for student-athletes to work on classwork. The locker rooms include separate locker and shower areas for the team.
Christy Johnson-Lynch and the Cyclone coaches were given their own locker room during the renovations as well, giving them a place to meet as a staff during matches.
Out on the Hilton court, a spectacular new score and video board by Daktronics was introduced in 2006. The system includes a center-hung score and video display featuring Daktronics' ProStar technology and ProAd digital displays. The video boards have the capability to showcase game information, statistics, amazing colorful animation and spectacular video images.
Court extensions were later added to the north and south sides of the court, allowing the team to practice with two nets set up on the court at the same time, and equipment upgrades were also made to the net system.
The Cyclone coaching staff's offices are located on the West side of Hilton Coliseum. The volleyball office suite, also remodeled after the 2010 flooding, includes a separate office work space for team managers, extra storage space and is outfitted with upgraded technology to aid in recruiting and scouting.
From US Highway 30, take the University Boulevard Exit (exit 146) and turn right off the exit. Follow University Boulevard around past Jack Trice Stadium to Hilton Coliseum. It will be on your left.
