Between Seneca Wallace's throwing and Ennis Haywood's running, Iowa State rolled up 558 yards of total offense in a 31-28 win before a record 24,000 fans at the dedication of Ohio's Peden Stadium. The 558 total yards were the second most produced by an Iowa State team on the road in school history.

Ohio generated 168 yards of total offense in the first quarter and led 14-7, but Wallace, who completed 15-of-28 passes for 250 yards with a pair of interceptions, led a ball control offense that erased that deficit by scoring on four of its first six possessions. Much of the dirty work was done by Haywood, who earned Big 12 co-offensive player of the week honors after gaining 219 yards on 33 carries, his third career game of 200  or more rushing yards.

Iowa State's four early scoring drives of 65, 86, 52 and 80 yards and a third-quarter 66-yard TD dash by Haywood gave the Cyclones a 31-14 lead with 2:17 left in the third quarter. Making adjustments at halftime, the ISU defense stiffened and allowed just 122 yards in the second and third quarters. Ohio closed the gap to 31-28 with 5:18 left in the game on touchdown receptions of 31 and 53 yards by Joe Mohler.

But the Cyclone offense took over the game late, running out the final 5:25 on an ensuing 11-play drive of 57 yards, the final play a six-yard gain on 4th-and-3 by Haywood to ice the Cyclones' 11th-straight non-conference win. Wide receiver Lane Danielsen had seven catches for 110 yards and 47 rushing yards with one TD on two carries. Craig Campbell had six receptions for 111 yards.

ISU outgained the Bobcasts, 558-436, including a 308-285 advantage on the ground, the first time Ohio had been outrushed since the Cyclones 25-15 win over the Bobcats the previous season. Linebacker Justin Eilers had 18 tackles for Iowa State, while middle linebacker Matt Word made 15 tackles, including one for loss and recovered a fumble. Safety Marc Timmons made a career-high 13 tackles.
