Clone Zone Classics: 1991 ISU-Missouri
COLUMBIA, Mo. - Quarterback Kevin Caldwell's record-setting performance helped the Cyclones win a 23-22 decision over the Missouri Tigers.
The Cyclones scored first on a 12-yard touchdown run by Caldwell and on a 26-yard field goal by placekicker Ty Stewart, putting ISU up 10-0 with 5:07 left in the first quarter. Mizzou came back with two field goals of its own to cut the ISU lead to 10-6. Stewart connected once again, hitting a 38-yard field goal with 3:08 remaining in the first half, but the Tigers scored a touchdown with :53 left to tie the game, 13-13 at halftime.
In the second half, ISU jumped out to a 23-13 lead on a successful 43-yard field goal by Stewart and a 14-yard touchdown run by fullback Jim Knott. Nevertheless, the Tigers pulled to within a touchdown with 2:25 left in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard field goal by placekicker Jeff Jacke. Then, with four seconds left in the game, the Tigers' Kenny Holly caught a four-yard touchdown pass to pull Missouri within one point. The Tigers elected for a two-point conversion and the victory instead of the tie. Johnson's pass attempt to the same receiver, Holly, was intercepted by ISU defensive back Weylan Harding to end the game.
Caldwell rushed for more yards than any Iowa State quarterback ever, gaining 164 yards in 30 attempts.
