AMES, Iowa – Iowa State cross country and track and field head coach Martin Smith announced the hiring of incoming assistant coach Jeremy Sudbury, Wednesday. Sudbury previously coached under Smith at the University of Oklahoma and will take on the role of coaching the Cyclone distance runners.

Sudbury is looking forward to the challenge ahead at Iowa State.

“I’m very excited to come to Iowa State and be a part of the commitment they’re making to track and field and cross country,” Sudbury said. “It’s a unique opportunity to have an athletic director who is excited about the program. The program is really surging, and the facilities here are top notch. The indoor facility is second to none, and the cross country course has hosted several NCAA championships meets. They are great recruiting tools.”

During his time in Norman, Okla., Sudbury served initially as a volunteer assistant in 2012 before being named the assistant coach of the men’s distance program. Sudbury also oversaw recruiting operations for the Sooners.

Smith is happy to bring a familiar face to Ames, especially one with Sudbury’s skill set.

“Jeremy and I have a five-year relationship, with the first three coming while he was a student-athlete in my program and the last two years as my assistant coach,” Smith said. “We have always had a great working chemistry together. Jeremy has a great understanding of my style of work, which gives him a unique tool in bridging the coach to student-athlete gap. One of his strongest assets is his ability to develop middle-distance, distance and cross country runners and get them to buy into the system.”

Sudbury competed as a student-athlete at the University of Oklahoma from 2009 to 2012. The Las Vegas, Nev., native holds the Sooner record in the 10,000-meter run at 29:18.64 and is a two-time All-Big 12 performer on the track. On the cross country course, Sudbury was a key contributor, leading Oklahoma to sixth (2011) and 12th (2009) place finishes at the NCAA Championships.

Sudbury was also named the Big 12 Track and Field Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2010, rewarding his success both on the track and in the classroom.

Prior to running for the Sooners, Sudbury attended Paradise Valley Community College, where he garnered NJCAA All-America honors five times and helped guide the Pumas to the 2008 NJCAA national title.
