AMES, Iowa- The No. 43 Iowa State men’s golf team is heading back to NCAA Regionals. The Cyclones earned their second NCAA Regional appearance in the last three seasons as the No. 9 seed in the NCAA Columbia Regional on May 15-17, announced this morning on the Golf Channel.

The NCAA Columbia Regional will be hosted by the University of Missouri at the The Club at Old Hawthorne. The top five teams in the six regionals will move on to the NCAA Championships, May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

Iowa State head men’s golf coach Andrew Tank, now in his fourth season as the Cyclone leader, has made ISU golf a program on the rise. The Cyclones ended a 13-year drought of making the NCAA Regional in 2012, and in 2013, All-American Scott Fernandez was an individual qualifier to the NCAA Regionals. It marks the eighth NCAA Regional team appearance in Cyclone history: 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2012, 2014.

Iowa State’s five runner-up finishes during the season put the Cyclones in good shape to receive a postseason bid, but their outstanding performance at the Big 12 Championships certainly sealed the deal.

ISU finished fourth at the Big 12 Championship en route to its second-best finish in Big 12 history (3rd in 1997). Three Cyclones were named to the Big 12 All-Tournament team, led by junior Sam Daley, who was the runner-up medalist (72-74-69-71). Daley’s performance was the best by a Cyclone in Big 12 history and the highest finish by a Cyclone since Dan Molyneaux won the 1953 Big Seven title.

Daley is third on the team in stroke average at 72.73 and has three top-10 finishes this season.

Freshmen Nick Voke and Ruben Sondjaja joined Daley on the All-Tournament team by tying for ninth, respectively.

The freshman duo has produced outstanding rookie seasons for the Cyclones. Voke is second on the team in stroke average (72.39) and leads the team in sub-70 rounds with eight. Sondjaja is fourth on the team in scoring (72.97) and tied the school record earlier this season with a 64 at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational.

Fernandez, a junior All-American, is once again ISU’s leader with a team-low 71.94 stroke average. He has a team-best six top-10 finishes and will be playing in his third-straight NCAA Regional. Fernandez qualified as an individual to the Ohio State Regional in 2013, tying for 13th.
