FARGO, N.D. - The strength of Iowa State wrestling’s 2014 recruiting class was on display this past weekend at the USA Junior Freestyle Championships. Three future Cyclones worked their way to the All-America podium, one garnering a national title.

In the 220-pound bracket, Marcus Harrington tore through the field on his way to the championship match. Harrington held his opponents scoreless in his opening three matches, winning by tech fall in each bout by a total score of 31-0. The Waterloo, Iowa, native gave up just five points over his seven matches.

Harrington admitted he was about 10 pounds under his ideal weight at the tournament and relied on his speed and conditioning to keep a heightened pace in his matches. His strategy paid off big, notching six consecutive tech falls en route to the title match. In the finals, Harrington was pitted against Oklahoma prep standout Andrew Dixon, who was putting on a show of his own on the other side of the bracket.

Dixon challenged Harrington early, but the Cyclone signee captured the title with a 7-2 decision. Harrington dictated the pace of the match from start to finish.

Harrington joins Renaldo Rodriguez-Spencer (145lb, Greco) as national champion, giving Iowa State two atop the podium at the 2014 USAW Junior National Championships.

Rodriguez-Spencer also took eighth in the freestyle competition, notching four straight tech falls before falling in back-to-back matches.

At 160 pounds, Maryland high school standout Logan Breitenbach wrestled to a fifth-place finish. Breitenbach launched a high-scoring attack en route to the podium, scoring 12 or more points in four of his five victories not decided by fall and also scoring 10 in a shutout tech fall.

The Severna Park, Maryland, native went 6-2 in the tournament, giving Iowa State its third Fargo All-American at the 2014 junior championships.
