Jeff Warrick, who came to Iowa State in 1998, is in his 16th season as Iowa State’s head diving coach. Eight of his divers have earned a total of 18 All-Big 12 honors, including Hillary Nichols, who won a Big 12 Championship on platform at the 2005 meet.

2012-13 freshman Elyse Brouillette earned All-Big 12 status on the 1-meter and platform boards at the Big 12 Championships, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Brouillette advanced to the Zone Diving Championships, finishing 21st on platform, 30th on 3-meter and 31st on the 1-meter springboard. Brouillette was named the Big 12 Diver of the Week on Dec. 12, 2012, the fifth Iowa State diver to receive the award.

During the 2009-10 season, Tien Tran earned All-Big 12 honors on 1-meter, 3-meter and platform at the conference championships. Her score of 271.75 during the finals of the platform event gave her a second school record to go with her 3-meter school record set back in 2008. Tran’s success continued into the postseason where she became the first Cyclone since Hillary Nichols in 2005 to qualify for the NCAA Championships and finished an Iowa State-best 19th on the platform board.

Warrick has coached 30 Cyclone men’s and women’s divers to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Tran is one of four female divers in school history to qualify for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in all four years of her eligibility, joining Erin Cowan, Janet Lahti and Donna Wasielewski as Cyclones to accomplish the feat.

Warrick’s coaching saw four Iowa State divers earn trips to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March 2011, the first time in Warrick’s tenure four made it and the first time four Cyclones earned a ticket since 1988. Sarah Nelson led the group at Zones with a 17th place finish on 1-meter.

In 2005, Nichols finished fifth on the platform, seventh on the 3-meter and eighth on the 1-meter board to become the first Cyclone diver to qualify for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships since Janet Lahti in 1987. She finished 33rd on the 1-meter and 25th on both the 3-meter and platform.

Warrick came to Iowa State following three years as the head diving coach at West High School in Davenport, Iowa. From 1995-97, he coached several Falcon divers to the state meet, including the third-place finisher at the 1997 state championships. He also taught math classes at West High.

Warrick, who also served as assistant coach of the Bettendorf Diving Club from 1996-98, received his bachelor’s degree in secondary mathematics education from Indiana University in 1994. While at Indiana, he was a member of the Hoosiers’ diving team. As a diver he was a three-time Big Ten finalist, a qualifier for the 1992 NCAA Diving Championships, a participant in the 1994 Olympic Sports Festival and a finalist at the 1994 United States Senior Outdoor Championships.

In 1992, he earned honorable mention All-America recognition on the platform and was bestowed with the Jack D. Tichenor Award that recognizes the Indiana student-athlete earning the highest grade-point average.

At Indiana, Warrick not only excelled on the diving board, but also in the classroom. He was named a GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1992, a three-time Scholastic Achievement Award recipient and earned the Big Ten Scholar-Athlete Award three times.

During his time at Indiana, Warrick also worked with divers in the summer season at the Indiana Diving Academy in Bloomington, Ind., from 1990-95.

Warrick and his wife, Kathy, reside in Ames with their daughter, Elyse, and son, Ean.
